“When the next history of the CDC is written, 2020 will emerge as perhaps the darkest chapter in its 74 years, rivaled only by its involvement in the infamous Tuskegee experiment”
History is being written & it does not look good for this Administration.
An incredible account w interviews from inside the CDC. Read every word.
“Senior CDC staff describe waging battles that are as much about protecting science from the White House as protecting the public from COVID-19. It is a war that they have, more often than not, lost.”

This story. As a reader, I was riveted. As a reporter, I am in awe (and v v jealous). A must read. propublica.org/article/inside…
Spectacular & appalling @propublica reveal of @CDC's #COVID19 disaster. Jay Butler email ~Memorial Day guidance switch: “I am very troubled on this Sunday morning that there will be people who will get sick and perhaps die because of what we were forced to do.." twitter.com/apoorva_nyc/st…

I have had the privilege of working for @CDCgov and hold the public health professionals & scientists there in the highest regard.
We risk a permanent "bankruptcy of trust" if we continue down this path.
We must protect the integrity of the science.

Each new round of reporting on the marginalization and knee-capping of CDC during the pandemic is more depressing than the last.
Here, a deep dive from ProPublica on how the White House made CDC "into an agent of propaganda for a political regime"

"I am very troubled on this Sunday morning that there will be people who will get sick and perhaps die because of what we were forced to do” -- Dr Jay Butler, CDC.
This story is so sad, so absolutely infuriating.

Wow - I'm far from the first to tweet this article, but if you have not read it yet, read every word:
"It’s mind-boggling in the totality of ambition to so deeply undermine what’s so vitally important to the public."
So much in here. A painful history.

How the world’s greatest public hlth organization @CDCgov was brought to its knees by the #coronavirus, the US president and the capitulatn of its own leaders, causing damage that cud last much longer than the virus propublica.org/article/inside…
If you're going to read one story about what happened inside the @CDCgov, make it this one. It will depress you, anger you and leave you shaking your head. Inside the Fall of the CDC propublica.org/article/inside…

What a sad story & a cautionary tale. I know so many outstanding scientists at CDC. If they had been allowed to lead, they would have done an amazing job during this crisis.
As a former SHO, we assumed a lot of what is in this piece, and confirmed it in private conversations with @CDC leaders.
As a member of CID’s Board of Scientific Counselors, this saddens and deeply concerns me.

over the last day we've gotten not one but two deep investigations into how the CDC has been hamstrung during COVID.
tons of scoops in this @propublica piece, including the story of how the White House interfered with its guidance for churches:
Epidemiologist & Health Economist. Senior Fellow FAS. Spent 16 yrs @HarvardChanSPH. @Harvard & @JohnsHopkins alum. #COVID19 updates since Jan’20. Vote @JoeBiden
📍TRUMP WH MUZZLED CDC—Trump wanted churches open. So, WH told the CDC to remove church “choir singing” from guidelines of risky #COVID19 activities. CDC refused to edit & published anyway. WH Pence office went ballistic—forced deletion from CDC website. 🧵propublica.org/article/inside…pic.twitter.com/8pb7pEGaGs
2) “Senior CDC staff describe waging battles that are as much about protecting science from the White House as protecting the public from COVID-19. It is a war that they have, more often than not, lost.
3) “Employees spoke openly about their “hill to die on” — the political interference that would prompt them to leave. Yet again and again, they surrendered and did as they were told. It wasn’t just worries over paying mortgages or forfeiting the prestige of the job.
5) The horror stories are almost unspeakably sad. “Collectively, the interviews and documents show an insular, rigorous agency colliding head-on with [Trump WH] desperate to preserve the impression that it had the pandemic under control.”

This from @propublica is a painful but necessary read to prevent future health catastrophes. Question for Biden, Congress: How do we fix the agency to stop future WH interference, or establish independence from future anti-science disinformation assaults? propublica.org/article/inside…

This is by far the best reporting I've seen on how the CDC was kneecapped by politics. The "bankruptcy of trust" this has caused, with the public no longer trusting our premier public health agency, will be a terrible legacy of this administration. propublica.org/article/inside…
