If you're traveling for the holidays, understand that care systems are at capacity *before* a likely series of spikes in the next 8 weeks. It's not just COVID, it's recognizing that our care systems won't be able to care for *anyone*. @edyong209 writes: theatlantic.com/health/archive…

🚨I wrote about UNMC--the hospital that, perhaps more than any other in the US, had prepared for a pandemic. It has amazing facilities. Its staff anticipated, planned, drilled. And now? “I don’t see how we avoid becoming overwhelmed,” one doc said. 1/ theatlantic.com/health/archive…

When hospitals get overwhelmed, as is now happening, it’s not just COVID-19 patients who will die from lack of care. It’s folks with other treatable problems too. (See below) When people take risks with the pandemic, everything else also becomes riskier. theatlantic.com/health/archive… pic.twitter.com/hSTIr8L4Fb

"Not even the best-prepared hospital can compensate for an unchecked pandemic. UNMC’s preparations didn’t fail so much as the U.S. created a situation in which hospitals could not possibly succeed.”- @edyong209 shining a light, yet again, on #covid19 truth theatlantic.com/health/archive…

The UNMC Hospital in Omaha provided care for my mother in her final year of life. It's the hospital we would send my father to if we needed. My sister and her family live in Omaha. Reading @edyong209 on the disaster about to come in Omaha is ... hard. theatlantic.com/health/archive…
