Key point: transmission reductions this massive mean the threshold to reach herd immunity is lower, all else equal.
Vaccine hesitancy is still a major hurdle but these numbers will help a lot - by lowering threshold AND convincing people to get vaccinated. twitter.com/business/statu…

You’ll see experts say “if these numbers hold up”. But even if the final estimates are a bit lower it’s still a massive reduction in transmission. Higher than many of us expected to see. Still undeniably good news.

This was a study among the elderly - and vaccines tend to be more effective for young people. So, this is speculation, but good chance reduction is higher among rest of population.
Strong incentive for younger people to get vaccinated too which we need to end the pandemic. twitter.com/business/statu…

When this is over there needs to be a discussion about Medicine's de facto rejection of the idea of theory. Both here and with masks we've seen that fallacy of "there isn't evidence for X means X doesn't exist" when the right take is "in absence of evidence, theory predicts..." twitter.com/business/statu…

I've carefully read the preprint that this headline is based on and the "89.4% reduction in transmission" result is *wrong*. I say this as someone who regularly peer reviews studies like this for top public health journals.
