There you have it in @NEJM.
Pfizer is ~90% effective against delta. AstraZeneca is ~70%. This is similar to effectiveness against other variants, including alpha.
Vaccines work, even against variants.
Get vaccinated if you haven't already.
infectious diseases, health equity @PennMedicine. prev @BrighamWomens @GlobalHealthMGH. “His horoscopes were especially popular because they were often right”
Worth repeating: “Only modest differences in vaccine effectiveness were noted with the delta variant as compared with the alpha variant after the receipt of two vaccine doses.”

A spectacularly designed & executed study on the protection offered against the Delta variant of SARS-CoV-2 by the BioNTech/Pfizer and the ChAdOx1 vaccines.
Tl;dr They are highly effective!
Effectiveness of Covid-19 Vaccines against the Delta Variant
🚨AZ & Pfizer VE against Delta & Alpha 🇬🇧:
🗓 Oct 2020-May 2021, symptomatic infections
📌Pfizer: 2💉 93.7%
Only minor ⬇️ in VE b/w Alpha & Delta.
1💉 VE much lower for both VOC➡️2💉essential
Public Health England's test-negative case-control study for Delta variant now in NEJM: over 14,000 people with Alpha, over 4,000 with Delta nejm.org/doi/full/10.10…
Vax effectiveness against testing positive for Delta after 2 doses:
- BNT-Pfizer 88.0% (85-90)
- AZ 67.0% (61-72) pic.twitter.com/9UFy6CLSWw

Good news in the fight against the Delta variant - these COVID vaccines are highly protective. As expected from prior studies (and other viruses/vaccines) the booster dose is needed for optimal cross-protective immunity nejm.org/doi/full/10.10…
What we have been eagerly awaiting: mRNA vaccine efficacy against Delta is 88% 😎😎 BUT 2 doses are absolutely necessary, as 1 dose only provides 30% protection - a sharp contrast to protection against wild type virus 😬nejm.org/doi/full/10.10…
So there is lots of room for "fully vaccinated" people to still become sick to some extent. And again, we need to rethink how we act going forward - not just for this respiratory virus, but for all of them.
